Collaborative Health Education Committee

The UBC Collaborative Health Education Committee informs and ensures the integration of both classroom- and practice-based collaborative health education across UBC and the province, complementing discipline-specific programming. The Collaborative Health Education Committee makes recommendations and decisions regarding issues advanced by the UBC Health Integrated Curriculum Implementation Group, Practice Education Network, and operations team. The Committee advises on strategies and opportunities related to the education mandate of UBC Health, as articulated in the UBC Health strategic plan and reflected in the associated action plan.

Terms of Reference

Purpose

The UBC Collaborative Health Education Committee informs and ensures the integration of both classroom- and practice-based collaborative health education across UBC and the province, complementing discipline-specific programming. The Collaborative Health Education Committee makes recommendations and decisions regarding issues advanced by the UBC Health Integrated Curriculum Implementation Group (ICIG), Practice Education Network (PEN), and operations team. The Committee advises on strategies and opportunities related to the education mandate of UBC Health, as articulated in the UBC Health strategic plan and reflected in the associated action plan.

Role

  1. Guide strategic priorities related to the collaborative health education mandate of UBC Health.
  2. Identify opportunities for innovation in existing and new collaborative health education (online, classroom-based, and practice-based).
  3. Consider recommendations brought forward by ICIG, PEN, and UBC Health operations team.
  4. Make collaborative decisions regarding resources and supports for the delivery of collaborative health education.
  5. Communicate decisions back to their programs and ensure integration and implementation of decisions within their respective programs related to collaborative health education.
  6. Advocate for system-level changes that will support collaborative classroom- and practice-based education.
  7. Recommend strategic partnerships for the initiation of collaborative initiatives and advance issues of common concern.

Accountability

The Collaborative Health Education Committee reports to the UBC Health Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Meeting minutes and issues requiring higher-level input and decision-making will be advanced to the UBC Health Executive by the Director of Education, UBC Health through SLT. ICIG and PEN report into the Collaborative Health Education Committee and are guided by the Committee’s recommendations and decisions. Issues of common concern may be brought to the UBC Health Student Caucus and Patient and Community Advisory Committee for input as appropriate.

Composition and Organization

  1. The Committee is chaired by the Director of Education, UBC Health.
  2. The Committee is supported by staff from UBC Health.
  3. Membership consists of a faculty member appointed by program leadership or its formally appointed designate from each of the health professional programs at UBC (including UBC Okanagan).
  4. Meetings are scheduled three to four times per year, or as needed under special circumstances.
  5. The Terms of Reference are reviewed annually.

Expectations and Obligations of Members

  • Foster and contribute to open, collaborative, and respectful discussions.
  • Read and review all meeting materials which, combined with active participation time, is expected to require an average commitment of up to 20 hours per year of membership.
  • Actively participate in all meetings, drawing on their own knowledge, expertise, and experience to provide constructive advice.
  • Find a delegate if unable to attend a meeting.
