GATEWAY BUILDING

Gateway Centre for Innovation in Collaborative Health Education and Team-Based Care

The Gateway Centre will be the first provincial hub of its kind in BC, dedicated to advancing team-based models of education and care. It will bring together students, educators, healthcare professionals, researchers, community and patients to co-create innovative approaches to collaborative learning, care delivery, and health systems research.

Why It Matters

Team-based care is a growing provincial priority recognized by the BC government as key to improving access to high-quality healthcare. As new care models of care emerge, healthcare providers need the skills and support to work effectively in interprofessional teams. The Gateway Centre will help meet this need by fostering culturally safe, collaborative learning environments and supporting future and current health professionals in developing the competencies required for team-based practice.

Our Mission and Role

The Gateway Centre will lead innovation and scholarship in collaborative health education and team-based care. It will:

  • Build learner competencies for culturally safe, collaborative practice
  • Expand placement capacity across BC
  • Act as a provincial resource to support the testing and scaling of team-based education and care models
  • Collaborate with communities to adapt education and care approaches to local needs

A Collaborative Initiative

The Gateway Centre is a UBC Health initiative developed in partnership with six UBC faculties and the Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health.

It will support collaboration between:

  1. Teaching clinics exploring team-based, interprofessional approaches to care and education
  2. Practitioners committed to continuous learning and innovation
  3. Indigenous leaders and organizations supporting to embed culturally safe practices and Indigenous approaches to care and education
  4. Researchers driving health systems transformation
  5. Patients accessing care and contributing to the education of future health professionals

UBC Health will continue to expand partnerships across the university and health sector to ensure the Gateway Centre remains a dynamic platform for advancing team-based care in BC.

Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic

A key component of the Gateway Centre is the Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic, a purpose-built primary care clinic located on the UBC Point Grey campus. Funded by the BC Ministry of Health, this clinic will serve as a dedicated space for developing, testing, and refining innovative models of collaborative health education and team-based care.

The clinic will support hands-on learning, applied research and real-world implementation of new approaches to interprofessional education and care.  Insights and practices developed here will be shared and scaled through a broader network of current and emerging team-based care teaching clinics, amplifying impact across British Columbia.
