Facilitating interdisciplinary research beyond the expected

Through the Health After 2020 program, UBC Health supports researchers to engage in interdisciplinary, cross-institutional collaborations to undertake pioneering health-oriented research in areas of the university that stretch beyond the usual or expected.

In 2022/23, UBC Health invited seven collaborations across six faculties to be part of the program as they create change in health and the systems that foster and support health. UBC Health supported researchers to build partnerships with external collaborators and advance and disseminate their research through dialogue sessions that engaged university and community partners.

Researchers go beyond traditional boundaries to include collaborations with:

  • School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture to increase outdoor play opportunities in early learning and childcare centres
  • Department of Theatre and Film to help people learn about ways of communicating that do not require spoken words
  • Visual arts program to spark public action on food insecurity

Through Health After 2020, UBC Health supports efforts that address the challenge of responding to the broad and ongoing effects of the pandemic and builds a community of UBC Health Scholars.

Strategic Objectives

Health After 2020 advances the following UBC Health strategic objectives:

  • New research collaborations: Stimulate and support health research collaborations
  • Community of practice: Foster an active community of health research practice and mentorship, supporting and connecting health scholars and students
  • Evidence for new approaches: Help align university and sector activities to establish evidence for new approaches to health
