The BC Ministry of Health has committed operational funding to support the establishment of Gateway to Team-Based Care, set to welcome patients at UBC’s Vancouver campus in 2026. Once established, Gateway will be a provincial hub for interprofessional education (IPE) and innovation in the delivery of team-based primary care.

Gateway will integrate three core elements: training the next generation of healthcare professionals in collaborative care, providing comprehensive, team-based primary healthcare for patients, and serving as a hub for evaluation, research, and the dissemination of innovative, evidence-based practices.

With this funding, Gateway will bring together over ten health disciplines as an interprofessional team of clinical educators. The team will collaborate with students, researchers, patients, and caregivers in a novel learning environment dedicated to continuous improvement and innovation in both education and care delivery.

What sets Gateway apart from other primary care clinics in BC is its close integration with UBC’s health professional programs. UBC trains more health disciplines than any other post-secondary institution in the province, enabling Gateway to foster unique roles that blend clinical practice, scholarship, and education. The Gateway structure will support a remarkable level of coordinated, cross-disciplinary collaboration.

As a provincial leader in innovation, Gateway will refine and demonstrate best practices in collaborative health education while developing scalable models for team-based care. It will also cultivate interprofessional training programs to equip future primary care providers to practice within emerging models of team-based care and highlight the transformative impact of team-based care on patients, families, communities, and healthcare providers alike. Learn more about Gateway
