On November 4, 2024, UBC Health and the Public Scholars Initiative, in partnership with UBC Connects, hosted a dynamic half-day event, “Voices for Health Equity” at Robson Square. This gathering of over 100 interdisciplinary scholars, health equity advocates, students, and community members provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and collaboration on health equity, spotlighting innovative research and grassroots initiatives.   

The event brought together a diverse array of participants committed to learning about, and tackling health inequities, fostering equity across the health sector. Here's a look back at the key highlights:

Engaging Presentations Addressing Health Equity Perspectives 

The event opened with eight thought-provoking presentations by emerging and established leaders in health equity. Each speaker brought unique perspectives and solutions to the table, offering a multifaceted view of the challenges and opportunities in health equity. Dr. Jennifer Black explored how innovative approaches to storytelling can advance food security, while activist-scholar Manvi Bhalla underscored the urgent links between environmental justice and public health and opportunities to drive change. Attendees were inspired by the breadth of work being done to address inequities in health systems and policies with 79% of attendees agreeing that the event provided new opportunities for collaboration.  

Panel Discussion & Dialogue Stations 

Participants engaged in a lively Q&A session and two dialogue groups that encouraged collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Themes of the two dialogue sessions were community engagement and conducting policy-focused work. These discussions allowed attendees to explore actionable strategies for advancing health equity in their own communities.   

Networking and Community Building   

The event concluded with a vibrant networking reception, providing a valuable opportunity for attendees to connect with like-minded individuals and forge new partnerships. Conversations carried the day’s energy forward, laying the groundwork for future collaborations.   

The post event survey results showed the following highlights:  

89% strongly or somewhat agreed that they learned something new,  

79% of attendees agreed that it provided new opportunities for collaboration,  

84% reported an improved understanding of health equity.

This gathering reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary and community-centered to advancing health equity.
