In 2020, we were all challenged to deliver education in a virtual environment while keeping learners engaged. But long before the COVID-19 pandemic, UBC Health recognized the value of online learning for busy healthcare professionals and developed TBC on the Run (an updated and improved version of IPC on the Run), an online module series designed to promote collaborative models of practice and support the development of team-based competencies. There is now more demand than ever for these online modules.

TBC on the Run is intended for learners from any healthcare discipline interested in enhancing their ability to practice collaboratively. It can be used across the continuum of learning, from pre-licensure, classroom- and practice-based education to continuing professional development. The modules facilitate learning that supports effective collaborative practice, which has been shown to optimize health services, strengthen health systems, and improve health outcomes.

The TBC series prepares healthcare professionals for team-based care and meets the needs of learners across the continuum—whether they’re students or practicing healthcare providers.

It is an open access series of seven interactive 30-minute modules that can be accessed simply by setting up an account. Learners receive a certificate after completing each module. Topics include:

  • foundations of team-based care;
  • interprofessional communication;
  • patient/client/family/community-centred care;
  • role clarification;
  • team functioning;
  • interprofessional conflict management; and
  • collaborative leadership for shared decision-making.

“We continue to refine and develop these online learning resources to meet the evolving needs of healthcare settings,” says Donna Drynan, Director of Education at UBC Health. “We’re currently developing a new module that presents the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative’s National Interprofessional Competency Framework. The six domains of this framework have been used as an anchor for the six core modules in TBC on the Run.”

To date, TBC on the Run (and its predecessor IPC on the Run) has attracted over 10,000 users from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Health authorities across BC are using the modules to support development within existing and emerging teams, including primary care networks. The modules are frequently used in conjunction with face-to-face sessions as a way to provide core content and free up time for interactive interprofessional learning. Over the past year, the TBC on the Run series has helped ensure teams across the province can continue to learn and grow during a time when face-to-face learning sessions have not been possible.

We continue to refine and develop these online learning resources to meet the evolving needs of healthcare settings

“Our goal for collaborative health education has always been to support team development,” says Donna. “The TBC series prepares healthcare professionals for team-based care and meets the needs of learners across the continuum—whether they’re students or practicing healthcare providers.”

UBC Health is proud to make TBC on the Run widely available as a valuable resource for pre-licensure learners, practicing professionals, and healthcare teams both within the context of the provincial focus on team-based care and COVID-19, which requires learning to take place online.
