Health program instructors, students, clinicians, and others who want to learn more about available education and training around substance use and addiction can access two new resources:

  • Substance Use: What You Should Know provides a high-level overview of substance use disorder and what all healthcare providers (future and practicing) should know about working with people who use drugs.
  • Want to Learn More about Substance Use? includes information about BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) education and training programs, clinical guidance documents, and other resources and readings relevant to substance use care and treatment.

The resources were developed by BCCSU in partnership with UBC Health to address a need that was identified from discussions with faculty, students, and others at the substance use education symposium co-hosted by the two organizations last year. Participants stressed the need for a high-level overview of substance use disorder and an outline of resources available to support people who use substances.

Additional resources—including a conversation guide for talking to patients, family, caregivers, and other healthcare providers about substance use—are also being developed. All resources will be available on the Substance Use and Addiction Education page.

Questions about the resources may be directed to Liz Yue, Substance Use and Addiction Partnership Manager at liz.yue@ubc.ca.
