Health students from UBC and their mentors showcased their learnings at the 12th annual UBC Interprofessional Health Mentors Symposium in April.

The symposium is the highlight of the UBC Interprofessional Health Mentors Program, a unique experiential activity in which interdisciplinary teams of health students learn together with and from a mentor who has a chronic condition or disability or is a caregiver. The program is part of the Patient and Community Partnership For Education at UBC Health.

For the first time in three years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium returned to an in-person format. The 2022-23 cohort included 145 health students from 12 programs (Audiology, Dentistry, Dietetics, Genetic Counselling, Kinesiology, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Population and Public Health, and Speech-Language Pathology) and 45 health mentors. During the symposium, student-mentor teams shared their learnings with other students, faculty, and the community through creative poster presentations and social media.

The Health Mentors program is a powerful example of community-based transformative learning focusing on enhancing patient-centered and team-based care. For more information, visit the program page.
