UBC Health is pleased to announce that a proposed team-based primary care teaching clinic on the UBC Vancouver campus is moving forward.

The clinic will be housed in the new Gateway Health Building, which was recently approved as part of the UBC Budget 2022/23. 

Expected to open in 2024, the team-based primary care teaching clinic aims to advance and accelerate the delivery of patient-centered, team-based interprofessional primary care through collaborative health education. The clinic will build capacity of health professional graduates and a future workforce prepared to work in team-based primary care that will ultimately enhance patient and caregiver experience and improve the health of people in British Columbia. 

Through the clinic, students across health disciplines will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of team-based approaches to care, gain experience in interprofessional teamwork and collaboration in a primary care setting, and recognize the value of diverse perspectives and roles in the team. The clinic will enable students to be better equipped to carry the requisite knowledge, skills, and values into their future practice of collaborative, interprofessional, team-based patient care.

The clinic proposal has been developed by a number of individuals from health professional programs across UBC, including medicine, family practice, midwifery, medical genetics, nursing, population and public health, psychiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, pharmacy, and kinesiology.

The Gateway Health Building will also include the School of Nursing (Faculty of Applied Science), School of Kinesiology (Faculty of Education), and Integrated Student Health and Wellbeing Services and Programs (Office of the Vice-President, Students). The Gateway Health Building will support teaching, learning, health promotion, interprofessional health education, community engagement, and research mandates in community health, active living, healthcare delivery, and health sciences.
