Practice Education Network

The purpose of the Practice Education Network (PEN) is to offer a space for the UBC practice education community to discuss innovations, challenges, and experiences related to practice education.

Members contribute information to make better decisions around practice education; innovate for effective learning experiences; and integrate strategies across UBC’s health and human service programs. PEN also provides a venue to recognize excellence in practice education and collaborative practice. PEN offers opportunities to align support for professional development for preceptors, support interdisciplinary research related to practice education, and advocate for enhanced capacity and quality in practice education learning environments.

Role of Members

The UBC Health Practice Education Network is open to UBC faculty, administrators, and staff who support practice education. However, UBC Health and PEN members may impose limits on participation in specific discussions to allow for a private space for members to grapple transparently with sensitive issues.

Practice Education Network membership is voluntary and its function is based on community input. Members provide subject matter expertise; inform others about the work of the UBC Health PEN; make linkages to the community and stakeholders; suggest topics and possible presenters who can make significant contributions to the community; and serve on working groups or task forces (where appropriate). Member involvement in the Practice Education Network is intended to help strengthen and shape the future of practice education at UBC.

Role of UBC Health

Sponsor – serving as the group’s champion internally and externally and fostering relationships across UBC practice education. PEN will be supported by the: Practice Education Manager, UBC Health;  Administrator, UBC Health; and Director of Education, UBC Health.

Knowledge Management – managing PEN’s repository of information and ensuring all members have access to information created or referenced by the community.

Meeting Facilitation – ensuring that meetings stay on track, each member has an opportunity to speak, and the group is working toward meeting the goals of the community.

Communications – sharing meeting invitations, information relevant to practice education, and summary notes with the Associate Vice-President, Health, the PEN community, and other relevant UBC stakeholders (where appropriate).

Technology Management – selecting, managing, and maintaining the right technology to ensure that members, regardless of geographical location, have the opportunity to interact, participate, and benefit from the community.
