Professor Jessie Gordon MacCarthy Memorial Scholarship
The 2020 competition is closed. The Recipient will be announced in March 2021.
A scholarship valued at approximately $950* has been endowed by family, friends, and colleagues of the late Jessie Gordon MacCarthy, who for ten years contributed through teaching, administration and research to the development of the Health Sciences at UBC. The award is made to the student who having completed the penultimate year of any pre-licensure Health Science course best combines academic excellence, demonstrated interest and leadership in the field of community health. Activities in the years immediately preceding admission to UBC may be considered as well as activities carried out while an undergraduate. The recipient is chosen by a committee, appointed by the Office of UBC Health. Financial need may be considered but shall be subordinate to aptitude and interest.
*Availability and value of scholarship are subject to confirmation of funds.
- Applicant must be registered in a health or human services degree program at UBC and be in good academic standing;
- must be in the final year of their program in the Winter 2020 Term; and
- must meet minimum requirements for holding and retaining scholarships as stated in the UBC Senate Regulations Governing University Awards.
Examples of eligible students in applicable programs:
Medicine, Pharmacy, and Social Work students in Year 4 of their undergraduate degree.
Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy, and Audiology & Speech Sciences students in Year 2 of their Master’s degree.
Nursing students in Year 4 of their undergraduate degree, or in Year 2 of their Master of Science in Nursing or Master of Nursing degree.

Request two letters of recommendations from referees with formal academic, health professional, or community educator roles, who can clearly describe your demonstrated interest and leadership in the field of community health, including your involvement in specific activities and the value that you brought to these activities. Letters of recommendation (maximum 2 pages each) must be sent directly by your referees to Veronica Grant at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note: Applicants must ensure that unofficial transcripts and letters of recommendation are received by the UBC Health Administrator by the application deadline in order for application package to be complete. Late or incomplete application packages will not be considered.
The Professor Jessie Gordon MacCarthy Memorial Scholarship winner is selected by the UBC Health Awards Committee, which is composed of UBC faculty members, students, and public members from the health community.
By accepting the MacCarthy Scholarship, the winner consents to having their name and program of study published on the UBC Health website and other promotional material.
