Enhancing substance use and addictions education content, developing collaborative practice education, engaging patient and community educators, and addressing rural practice education—these are some of the topics in health education that demand a collaborative approach. And that’s what a new UBC Health initiative will address.

The Collaborative Health Education Symposia series will bring partners together to discuss educational issues that require collaboration, connect diverse expertise and resources across disciplines, and facilitate and promote collaborative ventures.

The symposia will be held throughout the year and will facilitate knowledge exchange and synergies, mobilize partners, and create an impetus for internal collaboration.

“Collaborative health education can only be progressed through a combination of internal facilitation and external mobilization—with faculty members and academic units playing a key role alongside UBC Health,” says Donna Drynan, Director of Education at UBC Health. “The Collaborative Health Education Symposia are designed to convene people, share ideas, and set calls to action.”

Through these symposia, UBC Health aims to foster a culture of purposeful collaborations to advance its strategic objectives of education innovation, expanded placements, and an education ecosystem of team-based care.

The Collaborative Health Education Symposia are designed to convene people, share ideas, and set calls to action.

The first in the series is the Substance Use and Addiction Education Symposium to be held on June 25 in partnership with the BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU). The symposium will bring together faculty and the UBC community interested or involved in substance use and addiction education across both campuses to discuss this pressing health topic and identify opportunities to enhance existing offerings both uni-disciplinarily and collaboratively.

The goal of the symposium is to provide key partners with an opportunity to:

  • Learn about the partnership between UBC Health and BCCSU and existing resources that can be leveraged to enhance substance use and addiction education content
  • Discover how health professional students at UBC are currently being supported to learn about this pressing health topic
  • Share ideas and discuss opportunities to enhance existing substance use and addiction curriculum
  • Connect with other faculty who are involved in substance use education and training

Each collaborative health education symposium will drive continued transformations in teaching and learning across health and health-related programs, in both classroom and clinical settings, to help foster practices of team-based care.
