Video vignettes of patients and caregivers talking about their health journeys are available for instructors at UBC to use as part of their curricula.

The Living Library video collection illustrates how patient experiences and perspectives—on healthcare teams, communication and relationship building, stigma and assumptions, chronic disease, substance use, end-of-life, and healthcare advocacy—bring vital topics in healthcare to life and help learners understand the diverse perspectives and experiences of patients and communities.

The videos are a way to bring the lived experience of patients into student learning where in-person participation may not be possible or practical.

The videos were developed by UBC Health’s Patient and Community Partnership for Education (PCPE) in partnership with patients, caregivers, and community organizations. New videos have recently been added to the collection, and additional videos are being planned.

“The videos are a way to bring the lived experience of patients into student learning where in-person participation may not be possible or practical,” says Cathy Kline, Research Coordinator for PCPE. “They can easily be incorporated into existing coursework to enhance curricula as required viewing, case-based learning, or student projects.”

PCPE has developed a discussion guide for instructors to help facilitate conversations about the videos, a Living Library preview, and a brochure. These resources can be accessed from the PCPE page.

The Living Library is available to UBC faculty, staff, and students through Canvas using a Campus-Wide Login (CWL).
