Earlier this year, UBC Health proudly announced Dr. Peter C.K. Leung as the winner of the 2016 John McNeill Excellence in Health Research Mentorship Award.

This prestigious award, in honour of Dean Emeritus John McNeill who joined the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC in 1971, recognizes faculty members in any of UBC’s health-related disciplines, who have formally been identified as mentors and who exemplify a deep commitment to fostering the professional and personal development of faculty colleagues, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows.

Dr. Leung, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UBC, received this award for his outstanding accomplishments as a research scholar and mentor. Over the span of more than 30 years at UBC, Dr. Leung has directly supervised and mentored more than 100 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists, many of whom are now successful scientists and health care professionals in Canada and abroad. With a global reputation for his transformative research in several areas of human reproductive biology and medicine, Dr. Leung has been elected a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and has won Medical Research Council of Canada Scientist and Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Distinguished Scholar awards.

UBC Health hosted an annual awards reception in the spring of 2017 to recognize all 2016 UBC Health Award recipients, which included faculty members, students, health professionals and community educators.

The 2017 UBC Health Awards competition is currently underway, and winners will be announced later this year.
